Contrary to popular belief, we have a lot of LOL moments and fun at the hawza (islamic seminary.) i'll give u an everyday example.
today we had a awareness seminar organised on the on going atrocities faced by the shias around the world for no fault or reason, especially that in pakistan. the speaker had just returned from pakistan and was telling us about the events she witnessed, those not covered by the press, the inaction of their government, etc. the attendees consisted mostly of pakistanis and indians but since two of our iranian incharges were also attending, the seminar took off in farsi. mid way, the speaker switched to urdu saying she couldn't express her emotions in farsi. then again along the way there were whispers and prompts of having her switch back to farsi as the foreign crowd was increasing, and suddenly Khanom N (our lovely head of the cultural department) said "oh no. do continue in urdu. we get what you're saying." the crowd laughs. Khanom N- "no, really. we get it. we just don't speak in urdu so as to avoid Riya. otherwise we understand all of your languages."
the crowd laughs almost hysterically.
Khanom N is so funny and adorable. I mean, it was a serious and emotionally charged seminar! p.s- of course she doesn't get urdu. she was just joking. on a serious note, as the speaker said during the seminar, even if we cannot do anything to help the oppressed, the least we can do is pray for them.
